Aid & Attendance (A&A)
Veterans or surviving spouses may be eligible for A&A if they meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Require help from another person to perform daily living activities.
- Are bedridden or housebound due to disability.
- Have limited eyesight (e.g., 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes).
- Are receiving regular nursing home care for a service-connected or non-service-connected disability.
Aid and Attendance is paid in addition to the standard VA disability or pension benefit, increasing the monthly compensation amount. The amount is tax-free and varies based on the veteran’s or surviving spouse’s financial need and level of care required. Eligibility considers income, net worth, and medical expenses, ensuring resources are directed to those most in need.
